8 Life-Changing Lessons I Learned from My 60-Day Social Media Break
Hey there, friends, and my creative fam! Let’s talk about the effect of social media on our personal lives, shall we?
Now, I’m not going to pretend that I’m immune to the addictive draw of scrolling through endless feeds, liking pictures of fluffy puppies, and falling into the comparison trap. (HAHA) It’s way too easy to get sucked into the vortex of social media, losing hours of our precious time and mental energy. But what if I told you that taking a 60-day hiatus from social media could lead to some amazing personal growth and achievements? Buckle up, because I’ve got a story to share.
Achievements and Personal Growth During My Social Media Hiatus:
1 | My Portfolio:
Finally, after 15 months of being on a creative block, I conquered the beast that is my portfolio. 🎉 My last update was way back in 2020 (yep, it was gathering dust), and I know it sucked big time. But during my social media hiatus, I harnessed my creative powers and gave it a serious makeover. I showcased the new skills I had learned, like automation and branding, and even did some case studies to show off my projects. It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I can proudly say that my portfolio is now a reflection of the awesome professional I’ve become.
2 | Passion Projects:
One thing that often gets swept aside in the whirlwind of social media is our passion projects. 💡 But during those 60 days off the grid, I dived headfirst into designing brands that truly speak to my expertise and creativity. Without the constant distraction of notifications and the pressure to keep up with what everyone else is doing, I was able to focus on my own unique vision. Trust me, there’s something magical about reclaiming that creative space and watching your passion projects flourish.
3 | This Blogsite!
Yay!: Hold on to your hats, because I also managed to create this advanced blogsite from scratch! 🎊 It was like giving birth to a digital baby (well, maybe not that extreme), but boy, was it worth it. Now I have a platform to share my thoughts, insights, and experiences in a more intentional and meaningful way. And hey, who knows? Maybe you’ll find some inspiration or valuable tips there too!
4 | Personal Branding:
Whew, creating your own personal brand is no easy feat. It takes time, effort, and a whole lot of marketing magic. But during my hiatus, I immersed myself in crafting a brand that truly represents who I am and what I stand for. And let me tell you, seeing the final result made my heart skip a beat. I nailed it! 💪 Building a personal brand is an ongoing process, but taking that time away from the social media noise allowed me to focus on it with laser-like precision.
5 | Housekeeping:
Okay, I know this might not sound as glamorous as my other accomplishments, but hear me out. During my social media hiatus, I took care of some much-needed housekeeping tasks in my digital life. I organized all the files on my computer, revamped my design and client processes, revisited courses I had purchased but never finished, and (wait for it) actually read those books that had been collecting dust on my shelf. It was like hitting the reset button and decluttering my digital space to make room for new adventures and opportunities.
6 | Dental Health:
Now, this one might seem a bit out of left field, but hear me out. As a perpetually busy Creative Business Owner and traveling along with my work, I had been neglecting my dental health for a decade. 🦷 Ouch, I know. But during my hiatus, I finally faced the music and underwent major dental surgery, bidding farewell to those pesky impacted wisdom teeth. Yep, all four of them in one go. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience, but now I can proudly say that I prioritize my pearly whites. Self-care, my friend, self-care.
7 | Building Healthy Workout Habits:
Let’s be real, it’s easy to neglect our physical wellbeing when we’re constantly on the go and glued to our screens. 🏋️♀️ But during my social media hiatus, I got serious about my Pilates workouts at home. With my trusty pilates reformer bed I was able to dedicate time to strengthening my body and nurturing my overall well-being. It’s amazing what a little exercise and self-love can do for the soul.
8 | Mowing My Lawn:
Alright, this one might make you chuckle, but bear with me. I discovered that mowing my own lawn became one of my favorite house chores. 🌿 There’s something oddly satisfying about getting out there, connecting with nature, and taking care of my little slice of earth. Sure, I could delegate that task to a gardener, but I realized that sometimes, doing things yourself can bring a sense of joy and accomplishment. Plus, it’s a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. Lawn mowing Olympics, anyone?
The Final Note: Reflecting on Social Media Usage
The Futur, which is one of my favorite podcasts, has given me some ideas for the end of this blog post. On Episode 237, Chris Do and Vinh Giang said some wise things that really hit home with me, so I had to share them with you:
Don’t be so stuck on who you are now that you don’t give the person you will be in the future a chance. Don’t be so stuck on a certain set of actions. You can change your behavior, and you can also change, grow, and progress. You are not a static being; you are always changing and growing.
Isn’t that wonderful? It’s a warning that we shouldn’t let our love for who we are now stop us from becoming the best versions of ourselves. And just like how we act, how we talk to each other and figure out how to get around in life should change and grow with us.
When we talk about change and growth, can we just talk about how great it has been to realize how much social media affects our daily lives and take steps to disconnect? It’s been 60 days since I took a break from the noise, and I’ve grown and gotten a lot done in that time. It’s amazing how much we can get done when we ignore the things that don’t matter and pay attention to what does.
So, my fellow people who work from home, let’s end this post with a challenge. Take a moment to think about how you feel about social media. Do you spend more time browsing and watching things than making or doing the things you love? Are you comparing yourself to others instead of focusing on your own journey? It’s time to get out and get your time and energy back.
Trust me, if you give yourself 60 days away from social media, you will grow in ways you never thought possible. You’ll find new things you’re interested in, learn new skills, and reach new heights. So why not just take that first step and see what happens? I think you can do it!
Remember that your journey is special because it is unique. So let’s celebrate our growth and change and give each other the tools and mindsets we need to get through this unorthodox road. Thank you for coming with me on this trip, and here’s to a fun version of ourselves in the future! 🌟🎉
